What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? AEO vs SEO vs GEO

Written by the Prefera team

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making your business the one an AI assistant names when someone asks a question. SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of search results. AEO aims to be included in a written answer, usually with a handful of cited sources. They share foundations, such as clear pages and trustworthy sites, but they are measured differently, so you need to track both.

Key takeaways

  • Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making your business the one an AI assistant names when someone asks a question.
  • SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results; AEO aims to be named inside a written answer, usually beside a few cited sources.
  • The two share foundations: pages that answer plainly, sites other people trust, accurate facts and a site a crawler can read.
  • AEO leans harder on mentions on other sites, and you can only measure it by asking the questions repeatedly.
  • Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, so measure honestly and be wary of anyone who promises a sure mention.

What is answer engine optimization?

An answer engine is any tool that responds to a question with a written answer rather than a page of links. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude all work this way. Answer engine optimization, often shortened to AEO, is the practice of making sure that when someone asks one of these tools a question you should be part of, your business is in the answer.

You will also see the same idea called generative engine optimization (GEO), AI search optimization or LLM optimization. The names differ; the job is the same. The question to ask is simple: when a buyer asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in my category, am I named, and what does it say about me?

How is AEO different from SEO?

Search engine optimization is about ranking. A search results page shows ten or so links in an order, and SEO tries to move your page up that order so that more people click it. The result is a position you can read off a report.

An AI answer is different. It is a composed paragraph or list that may name a few businesses and cite a few sources. There is no position 1 to 10 for everyone, because the answer can differ between runs, countries and phrasing. The unit of success is not a rank, it is whether you are named, how you are described and which pages were used to decide.

What do SEO and AEO have in common?

A lot, which is good news. AI assistants that search the web read many of the same pages that rank in Google. A clear, well-structured page that directly answers a question helps in both places. A site other sites trust helps in both places. If you have done solid SEO, you have a head start in AEO.

  • Pages that answer the question plainly. Put the answer first, then the detail. Both search engines and AI engines favour pages that are easy to quote.
  • Authority. Mentions and links from sites other people trust help your pages rank and help engines treat you as a real option. See how to raise your Domain Rating without buying links.
  • Accurate, current facts. Wrong prices or dated features hurt in search and show up as wrong statements in AI answers.
  • A crawlable site. If a crawler cannot read your pages, neither search nor AI can use them.

Where does AEO need something different?

Three places stand out.

  • Third-party mentions matter more. An AI assistant answering "best X for Y" often leans on lists, reviews and discussions on other sites. Being named on those pages can matter as much as your own page. See how to get your brand into the lists AI assistants cite.
  • You must measure by asking. Search Console tells you about Google results. It does not tell you what ChatGPT says. To know, you ask the questions your buyers ask, repeatedly, and record the answers.
  • Comparisons and decisions count. Buyers ask AI to compare and to choose. Pages that compare options fairly, with real numbers and dates, tend to be what engines cite for those questions.

Do you still need SEO if you do AEO?

Yes. Google still sends people to sites, and many AI answers are built from pages that rank. The two feed each other: pages that get found get cited, and being named in answers can send people to search for you by name. Treat them as two views of the same goal, which is being the business a buyer ends up choosing.

How do you start with AEO?

  1. Find out where you stand. Ask your buyer questions on the main assistants and record who is named. This guide shows how to check ChatGPT step by step, and the method works for any engine.
  2. Read the cited pages. They show what the engines trust for your category.
  3. Fix the biggest gap first. It may be a missing page that answers the question, a missing listing, or a wrong fact.
  4. Wait, then ask again. Give engines time to pick up a change before you re-check, then compare against questions you did not touch.
  5. Keep the SEO basics running. Look for pages that are close to the top of Google and win a few more clicks. This guide explains how.

Is there a risk of over-promising with AEO?

Prefera Results for the sample brand Ledgerline: AI answers naming the brand, visits from AI assistants, Google clicks and authority score, with a timeline of fixes that went live.

There is. Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, and anyone who promises you a sure mention is selling something they cannot deliver. What you can do is remove the reasons you are being left out, and measure honestly whether a change moved the answer. That is the approach Prefera takes: it shows the real answers and the pages cited, writes fixes only from facts you approve, and labels movement inside the noise as noise.
